That day we will know that our cities have become cleaner, our dwellings more comfortable, and our technology delivering energy and generating wealth as never before. There are still technical, cultural, and regulatory problems to solve before a true urban photovoltaic spread, but we could find ourselves having a walk in the city one day, look around, and see that photovoltaic architectural systems have become prominent and common. Today’s electricity prices for the end users are, in the majority of cases, comfortably above the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for photovoltaics ( Vartiainen et al., 2017), even considering a premium price dedicated to solving the aesthetic issues associated with urban integration. If the price of the electricity is taken into account, a brise soleil or a ventilated façade made using PV modules could even become a source of savings or income. Among building materials, photovoltaic is the only one capable of producing electricity this is indeed its main purpose, and has the potential to generate revenues. Price has always played a role in the positioning of a material or a technology in a niche or in the mass market. The reason may lie in the price, which is higher for the ventilated façade, given the same thickness of insulating material. In fact, especially for the residential sector, the insulation coating is still much more prominent than the ventilated façade. This technology has proven to be effective and aestetically pleasing nevertheless, despite less efficient performance, simpler solutions are often preferred. These systems are architectural details designed to make good use of specific physical phenomena the ventilated façade, for example, has the function of reducing the overheating of the insulation material in summer or in highly irradiated facades, but it contributes also, thanks to the internal air flow, to dry the moisture accumulated by the insulation during the heating season. Examples of architectural systems are the ventilated façade, the trombe wall, the solar greenhouse, and the static shading, also known as brise soleil.
